The Bible Retrieval System Release 4.03.
README

README.bible is the version from the original author.

I can't remember where I got the original tarball... I've
modified it sufficiently to compile on my system (mainly by
throwing out the original Makefile and bodging up via autoconf).

Tested on Slackware Linux 10.2 and 12.0, and Solaris 10
(with Sun C 5.5 2003/03/12) systems in Aug 2007 and released
as bible-1.0.tar.bz2

tar xjvf bible-1.0.tar.bz2
cd bible-1.0
configure; make; make install

You can tell it to put the datafiles somewhere other than
/usr/local/share using configure's optional arguments...

--datadir=DIR	read-only architecture-independent data [PREFIX/share]

...see
	./configure --help

Interesting. Yep that's me.

I've consulted my archives and the last version I released was 4.03 on
August 9, 1995. Here is the header of version.h at that time:

Thanks for sending the link. A few people have tinkered with BRS over the
years and I think it's simplicity is what has kept it, well, not really
"alive" but at least an object of some curiosity.

Love the cartoon.

OK. I was checking to make sure you didn't mind it being revived.
I'll update the usual suspects with your email and put a link or two to your
homepage somewhere or another. I'll leave the original `README.bible'
intact since it's of historical interest. As you say, it's an interesting
curiosity from earlier times.

That is the one I have here. Thus far I've only modified it to the
extent that it will `./configure;make;make install' compile on the few
computers I've tried it on (and deleted a couple of errant '\' characters in
the man page). At most I would re-factor it to follow modern C notation -
the Solaris compile using the Sun cc rather than gcc issues quite a few
warnings but it works fine nonetheless. However, my C is pretty rusty -
dating back to the time BRS was written! - so whether I'll get round to that
is doubtful. It helped me get a bit of a grip on the Gnu Autoconf system
which was the point of the exercise - the original tar package can be hacked
around to compile on a Linux system without too much trouble.

I may get round to uploading it to one of the Linux software
archives which could lead to a few people taking it up. There's still a few
of us around who prefer the command line. I find the BRS is particularly
convenient when you need a Bible quote in the midst of a flame-war.

It's important to have a sense of humour about these things I think.
Although my Christianity is of the lapsed into damnation variety, the many
years of `Religious Instruction' in my youth have left me with a fondness
for the Bible.

	Shoot straight.
